OpenAI just made a huge move for macOS users by letting ChatGPT work directly with your coding apps. Here’s what you need to know about this new integration.

Big News for Developers: ChatGPT Integrates with Coding Apps on macOS

If you’re a developer or just someone who loves playing around with code, OpenAI has just rolled out a game-changing feature for ChatGPT on macOS. Now, you can get ChatGPT to work smoothly with your favorite coding applications like Xcode, VS Code, and TextEdit. It’s in early beta, but the idea is simple: ChatGPT can now access and interact with your code directly, giving you better, more context-aware help for your coding tasks.

Who Can Use This Feature Right Now?

At the moment, this integration is available for ChatGPT Plus and Team users. If you’re on ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu, don’t worry — it’ll be rolling out to you in the next few weeks.

How to Get ChatGPT Working with Your Coding Apps

Setting it up is pretty easy:

  1. Run a Compatible App: Open one of the coding apps that works with this feature, like Xcode, VS Code, or TextEdit.
  2. Activate “Work With Apps”: In the ChatGPT chat bar, click the “Work With Apps” button.
  3. Select Your App: Pick the app you want from the list of supported applications.

Once you’ve activated it, you’ll see a banner above the chat bar showing which apps are connected. If you don’t see it, then the integration hasn’t kicked in yet.

What Content Can ChatGPT Access?

  • Editors & IDEs (Xcode, VS Code, TextEdit): ChatGPT can see the entire open editor panes in the app you’re using, up to a certain limit. If you’ve highlighted some text, it’ll focus on that but still keep the full content in mind.
  • Terminals (Terminal, iTerm): For terminals, ChatGPT can access the last 200 lines of whatever is open. Selecting some text in the terminal helps it focus more, but it still takes into account nearby lines.

You can manage which apps are compatible by going to Settings > Work with Apps > Manage Apps.

Privacy and Data Control

Security is a priority here. Anything ChatGPT reads from your apps becomes part of your chat history, stored in your account until you choose to delete it. Here’s what you should know:

  • Model Improvement: By default, OpenAI may use your chat content to improve its models. You can opt out of this under settings by disabling the “Improve the model for everyone” option.
  • Temporary Chats: Want a temporary chat that’s not saved or used for training? That’s also an option.
  • Data Management: You can export your chats or even delete your account if needed.

For API and Enterprise users, OpenAI doesn’t use your content for model training. You can read more about their privacy policies on OpenAI’s Enterprise Privacy page.

How It Works Under the Hood

The integration uses the macOS Accessibility API to read content from your open apps. If you’d rather not use this feature, you can always turn it off by revoking Accessibility permissions for ChatGPT in your system settings.

For VS Code, there’s a dedicated extension you’ll need. You can grab it by heading over to Work with Apps > Manage Apps in ChatGPT settings.

Turning Off the Integration

If you don’t want to use this feature, it’s easy to disable:

  • Head to ChatGPT Settings in the macOS app.
  • Toggle off “Enable Work with Apps”.

This will remove the integration icon and stop any app interaction.

Why It Matters

Letting ChatGPT directly work with your coding apps is a big step forward in AI-assisted development. It means ChatGPT understands your work environment better, helping with debugging, explaining tricky algorithms, or even suggesting improvements — all without leaving your coding space.

Final Thoughts

This new feature could truly transform how developers use AI tools. By bridging the gap between coding apps and ChatGPT, OpenAI is making it easier than ever to streamline coding workflows and boost productivity.
